Karol Grela - Curriculum Vitae#

Prof. Karol Grela received Master degree from Warsaw University of Technology, and PhD degree from the Institute of Organic Chemistry PAS. As Alexader von Humboldt Scholar, he spent one year in the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung in the laboratories of Professor Alois Fürstner. Next, he returned to Warsaw, and completed his Habilitation in 2003. In 2008 he was promoted to Full Professor. Since 2008, he is a Director of newly formed group at the Biological and Chemical Research Centre of the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Warsaw. He cooperated with a number of companies, inc. Boehringer-Ingelheim Inc., Nalco Inc., Evonik AG, Umicore AG, Polpharma SA, Apeiron Synthesis SA. He is a co-author of more than 198 scientific papers and numerous patents.

Prof. Grela introduced to the industrial practice a number of olefin metathesis catalysts. One of them, so called Nitro Catalyst (Synlett 2013, 24, 903), was purchased by Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH and Co. (BIPI), and successfully applied in synthesis of BILN 2061 (Org. Lett. 2008, 10, 1303) the first reported hepatits C virus (HCV) protease inhibitor which shown an antiviral effect in infected humans (Nature 2003, 426, 186; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2016, 55, 3552).

Prof. Grela developed a new concepts in metathesis catalysts design. Scientific concepts developed bin his lab is based on the activation of Ru···O chelates, novel chelated catalysts, onium-tags, and were used to design new catalysts, as well as employed in a number of industrial systems.
