Jos Gommans - Biography#


Jos J.L. Gommans is professor of Colonial and Global History at Leiden University. He is the author of two monographs on early-modern South Asian history: The Rise of the Indo-Afghan Empire, 1710-1780, (Delhi: Oxford University Press 1999) and Mughal Warfare: Indian Frontiers and High Roads to Empire (London: Routledge 2002). He edited several volumes on South Asia’s interaction with the outside world (with Central Asia, Southeast Asia and Europe) and produced various Dutch source publications including one archival inventory and two historical VOC-atlases. From 2000-2010 he served as editor / editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Economic and Social History of the Orient and he has recently joined the editorial board of Itinerario and the Rijksmuseum Bulletin. As (co-)director of the NWO-Horizon project on Eurasian Empires (http://hum.leiden.edu/history/eurasia) and the Cosmopolis-programme (http://hum.leiden.edu/history/cosmopolisprojects) his current work takes a global and connective turn by exploring various early-modern manifestations of Eurasian Cosmopolitanism.
