Andrea Giustina - Biography#


Prof. Andrea Giustina is full Professor and Chair of Institute of Endocrine and Metabolic Sciences (IEMS), Past Prorector for Institutional and International Relations and Director of the Postgraduate School of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele, Milan, Italy. He is head of the Division of Endocrinology and of the Bone Center at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. President of the Pituitary Research and Education Foundation (PREF) and of the Glucocorticoid Induced Osteoporosis and Skeletal Endocrinology Group (Gioseg). Past President of the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE), of the Board of Directors of the European Hormone and Metabolism (HOME) Foundation and of the Pituitary Society.

He has been conference president, chair, or speaker in more than 150 international congresses and scientific meetings, e.g. the Acromegaly Consensus Conferences, International Conference on Controversies in Vitamin D, the Annual Congress of ESE and of the Endocrine Society.

Prof. Giustina is former editor in chief of Endocrine and currently Editor-in-Chief of Pituitary. He has published more than 450 peer-reviewed papers, with more than 44,000 citations. He has been awarded as Highly cited researcher in both 2023, 2024 and 2025.

He focuses his research activities on pituitary diseases, in particular acromegaly, its diagnosis, treatment and complications. He and his group described for the first time in 2005 the high risk of vertebral fractures in acromegaly. He is currently co-leading the global initiative for the definition of the criteria for the pituitary centers of excellence (PTCOE). He and his group defined during the pandemic the endocrine phenotype of Covid-19.
