Biography#

Prof. Galea is a neurobiologist with 30 years of experience in the glia field and central nervous system diseases. She holds a BS in Biology and a PhD in Neurophysiology from the Universitad Autónoma de Madrid. In the early ‘90s she was a postdoc in Cornell University Medical College, in New York, where she became junior faculty as an Instructor, and trained in molecular biology and astrocytes in the at the time emerging field of neuroinflammation - which she now tries to reform. In 1998, she started her own group at the University of Illinois at Chicago as an Assistant Professor. In 2004, she moved to Barcelona as a group leader in the new Institute of Neurosciences at the Universitat Autònoma as a ICREA Research Professor, a highly competitive research track dependent on the Generalitat de Catania (local government). Her projects have been focused on molecular and live characterization astrocytes in diseases and on developing astrocyte-targeted therapies. She has trained in live imaging during a sabbatical in MassGeneral Hospital, and has been consultant/collaborator of the companies Cerespir and Arterty Therapeutics for Alzheimer's disease. She belongs to several Spanish and Catalonian research networks. She has published over 70 articles in peer-reviewed journals, has obtained 13 grants as a PI in competitive calls, and is a regular speaker in local and international forums.
