Urbano Fra Paleo - Biography#


Urbano Fra.Paleo, Ph.D. Geography (University of Santiago de Compostela, 1996), B.A. (Hons) Geography (University of Santiago de Compostela), also holds a Diploma in Environmental Engineering (EOI Business School).

Urbano Fra.Paleo is Full Professor in Human Geography at the University of Extremadura, Spain.

He has been Visiting Professor at the University for Peace (UPEACE), Costa Rica. He worked at the US Geological Survey in Denver (1995) and was visiting scholar at the US Geological Survey Hawai’i (1999), Research Associate at The Environment Institute of the University of Denver (1996-1997), and Associate Professor (on leave) at the University of Santiago de Compostela (2007-2013). In 2005 he was Fellow of the American Geographical Society Library of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

He is member of the European Science & Technology Advisory Group (UNDRR), Co-chair of the Task Force on Measuring Hazardous Events and Disasters, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Senior Research Fellow of the Earth System Governance Project, and External Expert of the Scientific Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks (SCHEER), European Commission. He hase been member of the UNDRR/ISC Hazard Definition and Classification Technical Working Group, United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)-International Science Council (ISC).

Urbano Fra received the Innovation Award from the University of Santiago de Compostela, and the Sustainable Actions in Social Entrepreneurship Award from the University of Santiago de Compostela for distinguished contributions in introducing young students to science research.

His research interests lie in disaster risk, particularly methods for the evaluation of disaster risk governance. He also focuses on strategies of disaster risk reduction (DRR).
