Alexander Stewart Fotheringham - Biography#


Stewart Fotheringham, who has dual nationalities (UK and USA) was born in 1954. He got his PhD in Geography at McMaster University in Canada in 1980 and became a full professor at State University of New York at Buffalo in 1988. He has in parallell and later worked in several universities, mainly in England, Ireland and the USA. At present he is employed by Arizona State University.

Research: He has made important contributions to the international development of methods within spatial statistics and also applied these more advanced methods on interesting social science areas.

He has been invited to a large number of prestigious positions for researchers, visiting chairs, research boards and fellowships. Many of his activities are within Europe or the USA, but his network also includes Asian countries.

Publications: His publication list, with a majority of works written together with colleagues, includes 9 books, 38 chapters in books, 104 articles in refereed journals. After 2011, his H-index is 31 and his i10 -index is 70.

Research related activities: He has also been involved in traditional university activities, teaching PhD students, lecturing, and work within academic committees of all kinds. Furthermore he has had administrative positions based on excellent scientific knowledge like directorships for research clusters or research laboratories.

Examples of academic honors: Elected Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences, UK (2013) and elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (2013).
