Supervision of about 40 M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. Arranging and/or teaching several graduate and postgraduate courses on various topics at the University of Aarhus, the University of Copenhagen, the University of Lund, Sweden, the University of Southern California, Marine Bi¬ological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Marine Biological Laboratory at Eilat, Israel, and at the University of Vienna.

Administrative experience: Chairman of the Department of Ecology and Genetics, University of Aarhus, during two periods and Chairman of the Marine Biological Laboratory, University of Copen¬hagen since 1987. He has served on several committees for universities and research councils in Denmark and abroad and for various Danish government agen¬cies. Member of the Danish Natural Science Research Council (1974-1982). Council Member of the Freshwater Biological Association, U.K. (1979-84 and 1986-90). Editorial work: Co-editor of Marine Biology (1977-1995), Aquatic Microbial Ecology 1995-2000, Journal of Protozoology (1986-1993), Marine Ecology Progress Series (1980-2000), Marine Biology Research (2005-), and of Oikos (1978-2000) and member of editorial boards of several other international journals including the Board of Reviewing Editors of Science. Co-editor of two symposium volumes.

Prizes: Gold Medal, University of Copenhagen, 1964; "Ecology Institute Prize", 1986; "Huntsmann Medal for Exellency in Oceanography", 1986, Lifetime Achievement Award, American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, 2006, John H. Martin Award for a high impact paper in the aquatic sciences, 2006.

Publications: (see also attached list): About 175 original papers and review articles in international journals (mainly on protozoa, microbial ecology, population ecology and evolutionary biology) and six books in addition to popular articles, book reviews and two elementary textbooks. Tom Fenchel’s publications have almost 10,000 citations and he is listed as Highly Cited Author by ISI.
