Bengt Fadeel - Biography#


Prof. Bengt Fadeel received his M.D. (1997) and Ph.D. (1999) at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. He conducted his clinical internship at the Karolinska University Hospital and received his board certification as a physician in 2001. He then received a post doc fellowship from the Swedish Society for Medical Research followed by a national award from the Swedish Research Council (4-year position). This was followed, in turn, by a national senior investigator award from the Swedish Research Council (6-year position) (the only national position in inflammation research). He was appointed in the same year (2010) as Full Professor in Medical Inflammation Research at Karolinska Institutet. Prof. Fadeel served as Vice Chairman of the Institute of Environmental Medicine at Karolinska Institutet from 2009-2013 and was appointed again as Vice Chairman in 2023 (until the present time). Prof. Fadeel also held an appointment as Foreign Adjunct Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health at the University of Pittsburgh (2011-2016). He was elected as Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences (ATS) in 2012. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Frontiers in Toxicology and associate editor of several other journals including Toxicological Sciences, the official journal of the Society of Toxicology (SOT). He has also served as chairman of SweNanoSafe, a national platform for nanosafety commissioned by the Swedish Ministry of the Environment. He currently serves as a national expert on the OECD steering committee on advanced materials. Prof. Fadeel received the Environmental Medicine Prize (2011) for his work on the medical opportunities and risks of the nanotechnologies.
