Since July 1987, Engheta has been on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania with affiliations in the departments of Electrical & Systems Engineering, Bioengineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Physics and Astronomy. In 2006, the Scientific American Magazine selected him as one of the 50 leaders in science and technology. He has received numerous awards for his scholarly work (some of which were listed above). Just in this past year, Engheta received the Benjamin Franklin Medal, one of the oldest and most prestigious international awards. The Benjamin Franklin medal was established in 1824 (older than the Nobel Prize), and some of the previous recipients include Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Marie Curie, etc. And 122 of the previous recipients of Franklin awards received the Nobel Prize later in their careers. Engheta also received the Isaac Newton Medal, which is the highest prize of the Institute of Physics of UK.

In addition, he has received several teaching awards including W. M. Keck Foundation's 1995 Engineering Teaching Excellence Award, 1994 Christian F. and Mary R. Lindback Foundation Award, and S. Reid Warren, Jr. Award for distinguished teaching, UPenn (Two times 1993 & 2002).

Nader Engheta is considered one of the world's most influential scientists in electrodynamics, optics, and physics of waves, having introduced a diverse set of innovative and game-changing ideas in the science and technology of light-matter interaction at the nano-, micro-, and meso-scales. He has made numerous fundamental and transformative contributions to physics, electrodynamics and optics of materials at various length scales.
