Karl Donert - Biography#


As a leading European academic, Karl has been an advocate for the discipline through his work and projects he has coordinated. He acts for geographical education actively lobbying in Europe. He is an outstanding teacher, dynamic and enthusiastic, a national leader in learning and teaching, as demonstrated by his National Teaching Fellowship Award. He acts as evaluator and expert to national and international projects. He initiated and led one of the largest Bologna Thematic Networks for higher education. Karl believes in the need to promote and support the professionalisation of the higher education profession through the continuing professional development of academics.

He has been involved in innovative learning and teaching activities since working in higher education. He piloted many successful pioneering developments. Karl has a strong track record of getting grants for research and development in geography and geographical education, with 8 major projects and in excess 5 million euro since 2006. He is a nominated European expert to Brussels and is consulted widely for example on quality assurance issues associated with Bologna on TUNING higher education, curriculum development, internationalisation and issues associated with career development of academic staff.

Karl regularly delivers keynotes and seminars and workshops. He regularly publishes the results of his research in edited books and peer reviewed journals. Karl has more than 100 publications in the past decade. Since 2002 he has been a member of the expert education panel in Brussels, he evaluates proposals to review aspects of policy and practice. He assesses National scholarship award submissions, mentors new National Fellows for the Academy and acts as consultant to the Czech Ministry of Science and Apple Europe. Karl has worked in Tibetan refugee villages and in divided places like the former Yugoslavia and in conjunction with the UN in Cyprus.
