Egon Richard Diczfalusy#


Prof. em. Egon Diczfalusy, MD, PhD, DSc (hon.) dr.h.c.(mult.), FRCOG (ad eundem), FACOG (hon.) FAGOS (hon.) received his first MD degree “summa cum laude” from the University of Szeged, Hungary, in 1944; he moved to Sweden in 1946 and became a Swedish citizen in 1950. He obtained a PhD degree at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, in 1953 and a Swedish MD degree in 1958 .

He was Director of the Hormone Laboratory at the Karolinska Hospital between 1948 and 1967, Professor and Director of the Reproductive Endocrinology Research Unit of the Swedish Medical Research Council between 1967 and 1981 and Professor and Head of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology at the Karolinska Institute between 1981 and 1986. He retired by the end of 1986.

Professor Diczfalusy´s research contributions have been described in some 630 publications. They deal with various areas of obstetrical and gynaecological endocrinology (e.g. the establishment of the concept of the human foeto-placental unit, the hormonal regulation of ovarian and testicular steroidogenesis and the mechanism of action of steroidal and other contraceptives ) , reproductive health and healthy ageing. Some 150 research fellows from 44 countries have been trained under his supervision.

Professor Diczfalusy was Consultant to the Ford Foundation´s Population Program (1962 - 1978), to the World Health Organization´s Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction (1972 - 1984) and Senior Consultant to the latter (1984 – 1996). He was Consultant to the Rockefeller Foundations´s Population Division ( 1995 – 2004), Honorary Senior Advisor to the World Health Organization´s Ageing and Health Programme and Honorary Consultant to the National Research Institute for Family Planning, Beijing and to the Jiangsu Institute of Family Planning, Nanjing. He was a Member of the World Health Organization´s Expert Advisory Panel on Human Reproduction (1972 – 2007 ) and of FIGO´s Expert Advisory Panel on Ageing/Postmenopause since 1997.

Professor Diczfalusy is the recipient of various awards and honours (Doctor honoris causa ( at 6 Universities), Honorary member of Academies and of National Societies of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and/or Endocrinology) from 24 countries and the recipient of Special Awards from 8 International Organizations. He is also a Prince Mahidol Awardee (1995) and the recipient of the Bertarelli Foundation Award in Reproductive Health (2001).
