Mary Daly - Biography#

A graduate of University College Dublin, B. A. and M.A, and Oxford University (D. Phil. 1979); Mary E. Daly was a member of the School of History at UCD from 1973-2014. She has held visiting positions at Harvard, Boston College and the European University Institute in Florence. Her teaching and research has concentrated on the history of Ireland in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, focusing on socio-economic and administrative history. She has published on topics such as the history of Dublin, the Irish famine, women’s history, demographic change, citizenship, historical commemoration. She has served two terms as a member of the National Archives Advisory Council and the Irish Manuscripts Commission; represented the Royal Irish Academy on the Board of the National Museum, and as a Governor of the National Gallery, and she chaired a committee to oversee the release of Department of Justice security files to the National Archives. In 2014, she was elected as the first female President of the Royal Irish Academy in the national academy's 230-year-old history. She is also a member of the Expert Advisory Group on Commemorations for 2012-22, appointed by the Department of the Taoiseach (Prime Minister).
