Member of the Romanian Academy (since 2013), President of the Romanian Fiscal Council (since July 2019), professor of economics at The National School of Political and Administrative Studies (SNSPA), Bucharest; member of the EU High Level Group on Own Resources; Member of the Board, The National Bank of Romania (2014 - 2019); First deputy President of the Financial Supervision Authority (2013 - 2014); Member of the European Parliament (2007 - 2009); Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Banca Comerciala Romana (2005 - 2007); Finance Minister of Romania, 1997/1998; Chief Economist of the National Bank of Romania (1992 - 1997); Chairman of The Romanian Economic Society; Member of the European Council for Foreign Relations (2012 - 2020), Member of the Board of Trustees of Friends of Europe; fellow of CASE (Warsaw); research fellowships at Woodrow Wilson Center, the Russian Research Center (Harvard University, IMF, UN/ECE, OECDE; economic researcher at the Central Institute of Economic Research in Bucharest (1979 - 1989); analyst, Romanian Foreign Intelligence Service (1976 - 1978) from which he resigned in 1978. some of his writing during 1980 - 1989 were critical of Ceausescu's economic policies.
