Vincenzo Crupi - Biography#

Vincenzo Crupi is professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of Turin. After studying philosophy in Turin, he obtained a MA in Philosophy of Science at the London School of Economics, then a PhD in Philosophy again in Turin. He held research positions at several institutions, including the Center for Mind/Brain Sciences in Rovereto (Trento) and the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (where he was one of the founding team members), before taking a permanent appointment at the University of Turin in 2011. In Turin he directed the Center for Logic, Language, and Cognition (LLC) from its foundation (2014) up to 2021; he was instrumental in establishing the Center which, in the meantime, has become one of the leading European centers at the intersection of philosophy and the sciences. Crupi has been the principal investigator in research projects funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Scientific Research and by the Deutsche Forschugsgemeinschaft. He is currently associate editor of Ergo and the European Journal for Philosophy of Science and has been the organizer of numerous scientific events, including the Biennal Conference of the European Philosophy of Science Association (2021) and two editions of the Formal Epistemology Workshop (Munich, 2012, and Turin, 2019). Presentations of his research work amount to about 150, half of which invited, including talks given at the University of Barcelona, Institut Jean Nicod (Paris), Max Planck Institute for Human Development (Berlin), UCL, and Rutgers University (USA). Crupi is the author of 45 articles published in international peer-reviewed journals spanning logic, philosophy, cognitive science, and medicine. Crupi’s work on classical issues in logic and philosophy of science concerns Bayesian epistemology, confirmation, explanation, and conditionals. In cognitive science, he has been involved in experimental research on human reasoning and in theoretical models of information search. As a major domain of application, Crupi has also been working extensively on rationality and error in clinical medicine and medical decision making.
