Maria Carmo-Fonseca is Professor of Molecular Cell Biology at the University of Lisbon Medical School. Currently, she acts as President of the Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes and chairs the Scientific Advisory Board for GenoMed, a spin-off company dedicated to molecular diagnostics.

Carmo-Fonseca is member of the European Molecular Biology Organization and was elected President of the RNA Society (2021-2022). She is also an elected member of Academia das Ciências de Lisboa and of Academia Portuguesa de Medicina.

She is also editor for the Journal of Cell Science and the RNA journal, and she served in scientific committees for multiple national and international organizations.

Carmo-Fonseca has authored more than 150 scientific publications with a total of approximately 10 thousand citations (h index 54). Her work on basic mechanisms of pre-mRNA splicing aims to contribute to a better understanding of how disease-specific perturbations in RNA metabolism can be translated into novel diagnostics, prognostics and therapy tools.
