Professor Judith Brown is the best-known historian of the independence movement in India. In addition she has made her mark in studying the Indian diaspora. There is no doubt that she ranks among the top five of historians of South Asia world-wide. Her chair at Oxford is proof of that. She holds a honorary doctorate, University of Natal

Apart from the international impact in the English-speaking world particularly of Brown's writings and frequent lectures eg in India, South Africa, Australia and the USA and Europe she has had a tremduous impact due to her work in improtant functions such as member of British National Committee of International Historical Congress, member of governing council of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, Governor of Bath Spa University, History Research Grants Panel of AHRB, Governor of School of Oriental & African Studies at the University of London and advisor to American SSRC project on religion among diaspora communities.
