Viviane Baladi - Biography#

Viviane Baladi is a mathematician. After retiring in 2024 from her position of director of research, classe exceptionnelle, at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in France, she moved to Sweden, where she is a visiting scholar at Lund University. Her research concerns dynamical systems, ergodic theory and mathematical physics. She is a French and Swiss citizen.

Baladi has master degrees in mathematics and computer science from the university of Geneva. She obtained her Ph.D. also from the university of Geneva with a dissertation on the use of zeta functions in dynamical systems. She worked at CNRS beginning in 1990, with a leave of absence from 1993 to 1999 when she taught at ETH Zurich and the University of Geneva. She also spent a year as a professor at the University of Copenhagen in 2012–2013.

She has been an invited speaker, a great honor, at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2014, speaking in the section on "Dynamical Systems and Ordinary Differential Equations". She was a plenary lecturer at the International Congress of Mathematical Physics 2021 in Geneva. She received the Médaille d'argent du CNRS in 2019 and the Teubner Foundation Science award in 2024. She was Senior Fellow at ITS-ETHZ Zurich between 2022 and 2024.
