Jorge Alio - Biography#
Prof. Dr. Jorge Alio, has been Professor and Chairman of Ophthalmology since 1987, first at the University of Alicante and from 2002-2024 at the University Miguel Hernandez de Elche and now honorary researcher. Graduate with Honors from Universidad Complutense, Madrid (1976). PhD, Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (with Honors & Award of the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology) and Ophthalmology degree in Universidad Autonoma, Madrid (1980), Postdoctorate Fellow at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University (1985 - 1986). His main dedication over the last 25 years has been Cataract, Cornea and Refractive Surgery. As a clinician and ophthalmic surgeon, he has performed over 60.000 ocular surgeries during his surgical career. Author or co-author of 835 peer review papers (ResearchGate), 474 book chapters, 101 books (editor or co-editor), and over 2.931 presentations and invited lectures in international meetings. Hirsch factor 2025 (h-factor) 80 (Scopus), 28,642 citations, h-index of 99 and 33,536 citations in Research.com 2025, Google Scholar h-index 109 (44,666 citations). Over 100 international and national awards and recognitions, actively collaborates in Executive Boards and Editorial Boards of international scientific ophthalmological publications. Recognition for excellency in international research by the Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche (UMH) ranked in the top 2% of investigators most cited worldwide by Elsevier, August 2024. Prof Alio also holds Chairs at the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis and the European Academy of Ophthalmology. Member of the American Ophthalmological Society (AOS) 2019-2024. Director of 94 PhD doctorate university projects. Founder and Director since 2016 of the online University Specialization Course ‘Refractive, Cataract and Cornea Surgery’ (University Miguel Hernandez). In 2022, he entered the group of the 1000 Top International Scientists in the field of Medicine by Research.com.
