Rudolf Wachter - Biography#


Rudolf Wachter, from Winterthur (Switzerland). Professeur associé de linguistique historique indo-européenne at the University of Lausanne (2006–2020) and professor extraordinary of Greek, Latin, and Indo-European Linguistics at the University of Basel (1997–2020). Took a doctorate in Latin in Zürich 1987 with a thesis on "Altlateinische Inschriften" (Bern, 1987) and, thanks to a three-year research fellowship of the Swiss National Science Foundation, a second one in Comparative Philology in Oxford 1991 on "Non-Attic Greek Vase Inscriptions", which was later expanded to a Habilitation Thesis in Basel (1986) und finally published (Oxford 2001). He has also taught in Fribourg (CH) for many years, in Zürich and Heidelberg for several semesters, and as a guest professor in Mainz and Paris. One of his more recent projects is "Attic Vase Inscriptions" (http://avi.unibas.ch). Since his retirement he is mainly living in the Swiss Alps, also conducting local and regional historical projects.
