Hang Su is the founding director and professor at the State Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Environment and Extreme Meteorology (AEEM), Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has been heading the Atmosphere-Biosphere-Clouds Interactions Group at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry from 2012 to 2023. Su’s main research interests are atmospheric chemistry and physics. Among his widely recognized and highly cited studies are the discovery of new theories of atmospheric multiphase chemistry and recognition of distinctly different and representative regimes of cloud condensation nuclei activation and cloud droplet formation. He also has profound impact on science-oriented policymaking in climate change mitigation, carbon neutrality and air pollution control.

He has published 6 papers in Science and 20 in Science Advances, PNAS, Nature Geosciences/Communications and One Earth. With a total of 19200+ citation across his 200+ publications, h-index of 69 (google scholar), 7 “hot papers” (top 0.1%) and 17 “highly-cited” papers (top 1%), he has been recognized as a “Highly Cited Researcher” by Clarivate & Web of Science.

Su’s work and ideas have been recognized internationally with many prestigious awards and honors. These include his election as a fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), receiving the Arne Richter Award from the European Geosciences Union and Ascent Award from American Geophysical Union.

Su has successfully forged and pursued collaborations worldwide (90% of his papers are with European partners) and actively engaged in community service and outreach. He is a renowned ambassador in coordinating promoting collaborations between EU and Chinese societies, e.g., serving in the steering committee of meetings between MPG, Helmholtz Association, German National Academy of Sciences-Leopoldina and CAS, and establishing joint research centers between German, Finnish and Chinese institutions.

Since 2012, he has served as an editor/associate editor of flagship journals of EGU and AGU.
