Richard Sorabji - Biography#

Richard Sorabji completed a B. Phil. at Oxford. His first academic post was at Cornell University in 1962, where he became associate professor in 1968. In 1970, he joined the faculty of King’s College London, where he was appointed Professor of Ancient Philosophy in 1981. After retiring from King’s College in 2000, he held teaching positions as Professor of Rhetoric at Gresham College, London, from 2000 to 2003, Adjunct Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, Dept of Philosophy, from 2001-2003, with subsequent visits 2004-2005, Antonina S.Ranieri Distinguished Visiting Scholar, New York University, 2000-2002, Cyprus Global Distinguished Professor of Classics, New York University, 2007-2009, Visiting Professor City University of New York Graduate Center 2004-2007 and 2010.

He was the first Director of the King’s College Centre for Philosophical Studies, designing it in 1989 to promote philosophy for the wider public. He was Director of the Institute of Classical Studies from 1991 to 1996, and British Academy Research Professor at Oxford from 1996 to 1999.
Sorabji was President of the Aristotelian Society from 1985 to 1986. In 1985, he founded the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle project which publishes the first translations into English of mostly Greek philosophical texts from 200–600 A.D, mainly commentaries on Aristotelian works. 100 volumes have been published up the end of 2012. Sorabji is the main editor of this project and has himself contributed a general introduction to the commentators as well as a three-volume sourcebook on the philosophy of ancient commentators.
