  • Born in 1933 in Maribor, Slovenia
  • 1952: Graduated from high school (Gymnasium), Maribor
  • 1957: Graduated from the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana
  • 1963: Earned her Ph.D. (Dr. jur.) from the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana with a thesis on legal and criminological problems of the offence of assaults and battery (with an empirical study of these offences at the court where she was a magistrate)
  • 1959-1963: Research assistant at the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana (UL)
  • 1963-1973: Research fellow at the same Institute
  • 1968: Passed the bar examination
  • 1973: Assistant Professor (Dozent) at the Faculty of Law, UL
  • 1978-1983: Associate Professor at the same faculty
  • 1983- Full Professor at the same Faculty
  • 1981-85: Vice-dean
  • 1985-87: Dean of the Faculty of Law
  • 1987-89 : Vice-rector of the University of Ljubljana
  • 1990: Spring Semester Fulbright Visiting Professor at the University of Wisconsin Law School, Madison, WI, USA
  • 1993: July 1, Director of the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law, UL
  • 1994: Elected as member of the Criminological Scientific Council (CSC) attached to the Steering Committee on Crime Problems of the Council of Europe, Strasbourg; later elected as chairperson of the CSC
  • 1997: Reelection as Director of the Institute of Criminology Election as a member of the Slovenian Academy od Sciences and Arts (SASA)
  • 2002: Reelection as director of the Institute of Criminology (stepped down in 2004 for retirement reasons)


Alenka Šelih held lectures, inter alia, at the Universities of Brussels, Graz, Krakow, Munich, Novi Sad, Sarajevo, Warzaw, Zagreb, Harvard Law School, University of California at Berkeley, University of Southern California. In her carrier she has published as author or co-author eight books and over 300 articles, research reports reviews, reports, etc. in Slovenian and foreign languages.

Alenka Šelih has been member of national professional organizations in her field and member of Association Internationale de Droit Penal, Societe Internationale de Defence Sociale, International Association of Criminology and International Association of Family and Youth Magistrates and European Society of Criminology.
