Markus Ralser - Biography#
Professor Dr. Markus Ralser is a biochemist and systems biologist. He is currently serving as the Director of the Institute for Biochemistry at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and as Einstein Professor of Biochemistry. In addition to his research contributions, he is a leader in his field, serving as the head of a research group at the Francis Crick Institute in London.
Born in South Tyrol, Italy, Ralser pursued his studies in Genetics and Molecular Biology in Salzburg, Austria, subsequently obtaining his PhD in Neurodegenerative Disorders at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin. He subsequently received further training in mass spectrometry at VU Amsterdam.
His academic career includes:
- 2007: Junior Group Leader, Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics, Berlin
- 2011: Group Leader, University of Cambridge, Department of Biochemistry
- 2013: Group Leader, Medical Research Council, London
- 2015: Group Leader, Francis Crick Institute, London
- 2018 - present: Einstein Professor and Head of Biochemistry, Charité, Berlin
Ralser's research is centred on the field of cellular metabolism, with a particular emphasis on central carbon metabolism, oxidative stress responses, and the evolution of metabolic networks. His laboratory has pioneered methods to map gene-metabolism interactions and study metabolite exchange in microbial communities. Prof. Ralser’s contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the EMBO Gold Medal, the Colworth Medal, and fellowships from the Wellcome Trust and EMBO. These honors are a testament not only to his scientific impact but also to his role as a mentor and thought leader.
