Cognitive impairment in premature babies not permanent
New Scientist online, 18/01/2013, Douglas Heaven, The learning difficulties that can result from premature birth may not be inevitable, according to two independent but complementary studies. Together, the studies suggest that the relatively small cerebral cortex seen in many preterm babies contains a normal number of neurons despite its size – and that these neurons could be nurtured back to health with the right postnatal care. Article includes comment from Zoltán Molnár of the University of Oxford.

The latest investigations on the development of the dorsal forebrain in chick and mouse embryos showed a delay in the neurogenic properties of a subset of mammalian but not avian progenitors and could be responsible for the evolutionary origin of the corpus callosum.
