Wai Keung Leung - Biography#


Prof. Leung received his undergraduate and postgraduate medical degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received his training in internal medicine and gastroenterology in the Prince of Wales Hospital of Hong Kong under Prof Joseph Sung as well as working as post-doctoral fellow in the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas under Prof David Y Graham doing basic research on H. pylori and gastric intestinal metaplasia. Over the past 30 years, he has been working as an academic gastroenterologist in the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2000-2008) and the University of Hong Kong (2011 - present).

He is currently the Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation Professor in Gastroenterology in the School of Clinical Medicine as well as the Chief Director of the Clinical Trials Centre of the University of Hong Kong. He was also the previous Associate Dean of Research of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong.

He has wide research interests, particularly on Helicobacter pylori and prevention of gastrointestinal cancers, with focus on clinical trials, big data analytics, epidemiological studies, and application of artificial intelligence. He has published more than 340 original articles with a h-index of 75 (Scopus) and 92 (Google Scholar) including recent publications as first and/or corresponding author in the Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Gastroenterology, Gut, Hepatology, Nature Communications, Journal of National Cancer Institute, and Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, etc. Prof Leung was recently selected to be the Editor-in-Chief of the Helicobacter journal.
