Vita#

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Lehner is full professor and head of the database technology group at Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden), Germany. He received his Diploma degree in Computer Science in 1995 from University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He continued his studies as research assistant at the database system group until 1998, when he earned his Ph.D. degree (Dr.-Ing.) with a dissertation on optimization of aggregate processing in multidimensional database systems. Thereafter (11/1998), he joined the Business Intelligence (BI) group at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose (CA), where he was involved in projects on adding materialized view support and multiple query optimization techniques to the core engine of the IBM DB2/UDB database system. After his return to Germany, he again joined the database system group at University of Erlangen-Nuremberg as senior researcher. Together with his group, he initiated comprehensive research in exploiting database technology to support complex message-based notification systems. From 10/2000 to 2/2002, Wolfgang Lehner was on a temporary assignment at the University of Halle-Wittenberg holding the professorship for database systems. In 7/2001 he finished his habilitation with a thesis on subscription systems and was therefore awarded with the venia legendi. Since 10/2002, Wolfgang Lehner has been conducting his research and teaching at TU Dresden and is also involved in multiple industrial projects. Wolfgang Lehner was a temporarily visiting scientist at Microsoft Research in Redmond (WA), at GfK Nuremberg, at SAP Walldorf, SAP Palo Alto, and at the University of Waterloo, Ontario.

Services for the Database Research Community#

Since February 2023, Wolfgang Lehner is appointed member of the Scientific Commission of the German Science and Humanities Council (Wissenschaftsrat, WR). Since 2019, Wolfgang Lehner has been elected member of the Senate Committee on Collaborative Research Centres of DFG (German Research Foundation) and scientific member of the Grants Committee on Collaborative Research Centres of DFG. He was an elected member of the Review Board on Computer Science of DFG (German Research Foundation) from 2012 to 2018. From 2015 to 2018 he was the spokesperson of this Review Board. Since 2019 Wolfgang Lehner has been Managing Director of PVLDB and Head of the PVLDB Advisory Committee. From 2012 to 2019, he was elected member of the VLDB Endowment Board of Trustees. From 2016 to 2019 he was member of the PVLDB Advisory Committee. As an elected member of the board of the database and information systems (DBIS) section within the German Computer Science Association (GI), he served from 2002 to 2010. He was spokesman of the DBIS section from 2008 to 2010. In 2023, he was the local chair of BTW Conference on Database Systems for Business, Technology and Web, Dresden. Wolfgang Lehner has been a member of all DB-related top-tier conference program committees: SIGMOD, PVLDB, ICDE, EDBT, CIKM, ER, etc. for many years. Also, he serves the community as a reviewer for all DB-related top-tier journals like TKDE, TODS, VLDBJ, etc. He was a member of the Editorial Board of VLDB Journal (2005-2011) and is Associate Editor of ACM TODS (since 2018). He is a reviewer for multiple national and international research organizations (German Research Foundation, Swiss National Science Foundation, Korean Research Foundation, Czech Science Foundation, Volkswagen Stiftung, Humboldt Stiftung) and a regular member of multiple national and international dissertation, habilitation, and tenure track procedures. As an appointed member he is involved in Academia Europaea (The Academy of Europe) since 2014.

Since 2014, Wolfgang Lehner has been member of the board of administration (“Verwaltungsrat”) of the Saxonian State Library (SLUB – Sächsische Landesbibliothek Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden). From 2006 to 2014 he was the spokesman of the board of trustees (“Kuratorium”) of SLUB.

In 2021, he was selected for the DFG-funded Reinhart Koselleck Program, which enables outstanding researchers with a proven scientific track record to pursue exceptionally innovative, higher-risk projects.

Publication#

Up to now, Wolfgang Lehner has published five books on Multidimensional Database Systems (1999), Subscription Systems (2001), Database Technology for Data Warehouse Systems (2003), the XQuery Database Language (2004), and Web-scale Data Mangagement for the Cloud (2013). He is also editor of a large variety of journals, books, and proceedings. Additionally, he published more than 500 reviewed research papers in conference proceedings and international journals. Details can be found at the group’s publication page http://wwwdb.inf.tu-dresden.de/publications or at the Publication list at the Databases & Logic Programming bibliography server, Univ.Trier, Germany https://dblp2.uni-trier.de/pid/l/WLehner.html

Academic Projects and Industrial Relationship#

Wolfgang Lehner conducts are variety of different research projects with his team members ranging from designing data management infrastructures from a modeling perspective, supporting data-intensive applications and processes in large distributed information systems, adding novel database functionality to relational database engines to support data science and machine learning algorithms, investigating techniques of approximate query processing (e.g. sampling) to speed up execution times over very large data sets, and exploiting the power of main-memory centric database architectures with an emphasis on modern hardware capabilities. Apart from basic and mostly theoretic research questions (supported by Technische Universität Dresden and the German Research Foundation, DFG) Prof. Lehner puts a strong emphasis on practical research work in combination with industrial cooperation on an international, national, and regional level. Wolfgang Lehner maintains a premium research relationship with the SAP HANA Data-Management Platform group at SAP Walldorf, SAP Palo Alto, SAP Korea, and SAP Waterloo. Also, he is involved in various industrial cooperations with research centers in Germany and the USA.
