Jari Koistinaho - Biography#


Director of the Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE) and Professor of Neuropharmacology, University of Helsinki.

Jari E. Koistinaho received his MD (1985) and PhD in Medicine (1989) from the University of Tampere and was appointed Docent of Neurobiology in 1991. He is currently Director of HiLIFE (since 2022) and Professor of Neuropharmacology at the University of Helsinki. Previously, he has held professorships in Molecular Brain Research, Pharmacology, Stem Cell Research, and Regenerative Medicine at the University of Eastern Finland, where he also served as Dean of the A.I. Virtanen Institute and Director of Biocenter Kuopio.

Koistinaho has extensive international research experience, including positions at the National Institute on Aging (NIH), University of California San Francisco, Stanford University School of Medicine, Karolinska Institute, and Indiana University School of Medicine. His research focuses on neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, neuroinflammation, stem cell–based disease modeling, and translational neuropharmacology.

He has published over 300 peer-reviewed scientific articles and reviews, including highly cited papers in PNAS, Nature Communications, and The Lancet Neurology. His H-factor is 84 (Google Scholar). His work has led to major paradigm shifts, such as identifying microglia and other glial cells as key drivers of synaptic and neurodegenerative pathology, and it has catalyzed numerous clinical trials, including the repurposing of minocycline for central nervous system diseases. He has also developed widely used methods for vascularized and immunocompetent human cerebral organoids and humanized mouse models for Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia.

Koistinaho has secured substantial competitive research funding from the EU, Research Council of Finland, Business Finland, and major foundations, serving as PI or co-PI in large national and international consortia. He has supervised 38 doctoral theses to completion and mentored dozens of postdoctoral researchers.

He is a Member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, Knight First Class of the Order of the White Rose of Finland, and Commander First Class of the Order of the Lion of Finland. In addition to his academic career, he has founded three biotechnology start-up companies and served on numerous national and international scientific advisory and evaluation boards.
