Giuseppe Ippolito - Biography#


Giuseppe Ippolito is Full Professor of Infectious Diseases (IDs) at the Saint Camillus International University of Health Sciences in Rome. Until 2023 he was Director General for Research and Health Innovation at the Ministry of Health (MoH). Previously, he was Scientific Director of the National Institute for IDs "Lazzaro Spallanzani" for more than 20 years and Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Highly IDs for 12 years. He graduated with honours in medicine from the Sapienza University of Rome in 1978, specialising with honours in IDs and in Dermatology & Sexually Transmitted Diseases. He holds a Master's degree in Organisation and Management of Health Institutions.

He has been a member of several national committees set up by the Italian MoH. From 2020 to 2022 he was a member of the Scientific and Technical Committee of the COVID-19 Emergency set up by the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers.

International committees:
  • Member of the Scientific Committee of the Institut Méditerranée Infection, Marseille, France, 2017-2021.
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh since 2016.
  • Member of the Supervisory Board of Human Technopole since 2022.
  • Over the last 10 years, he has coordinated 8 (and co-ordinated another 5) EU-funded projects.
  • From 2005 to 2020, he managed health programmes for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tanzania and participated with WHO or the EU in programmes in Congo, Sudan, Guinea Conakry, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Uganda and Cape Verde.

He has published as main author more than 690 original papers indexed in PubMed, 28 books, 31 book chapters, 49 other publications.

In 1998, he received the Charles C. Shepard Science Award from the US CDC and the James H. Nano Citation from the US National Center for Infectious Disease.

In 2015, he was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary International Foundation.

In 2021 he was awarded the Special Linceo Prize for interdisciplinary research on Covid-19 by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and the Irti Foundation Prize.

In the same year, the President of the Italian Republic awarded him the title of "Cavaliere di Gran Croce al Merito della Repubblica Italiana" for services to public health and protection against IDs
