Degrees

MA (English linguistics) 1983 A. Mickiewicz University, Institute of English: The Cyclic and Postcyclic Status of Phonological Rules in Rapid Speech and Language Interference.

A study in the area of contrastive phonostylistics which investigated the interference of casual speech rules in the process of second language acquisition within the theoretical framework of cyclic phonology. The experiment administered for the sake of this work showed which rapid/casual speech rules of Polish interfered in the speech of Polish learners of English, which constituted a helpful input for the preparation of teaching materials for courses in EFL phonetics.

Ph.D. (English linguistics) 1988 A. Mickiewicz University, Institute of English: A Theory of Second Language Acquisition within the Framework of Natural Phonology - a Polish-English Contrastive Study. (published, cf. list of publications)

A study in the area of SLA/contrastive phonology within the theoretical framework of Natural Phonology. It lays the grounds for a theory of second language acquisition with special reference to the socio-psycho-physiological bases of language acquisition and use, which renders the theory liable to concrete extralinguistic applications, e.g. in the construction of second language learning/teaching methodologies. The work is based on a large experimental study involving Polish learners of English in both formal and natural setting. It also contains a set of data derived from speakers of other linguistic backgrounds.

D.Litt. post-doctoral degree = Dr. hab. = Habilitation (English linguistics) 1995 A. Mickiewicz University, School of English (= former Institute, renamed to School due to its growth in size): Phonology Without the Syllable. A Study in the Natural Framework. (published, cf. list of publications)

This monograph proposes a syllable-less model of phonology, called a Beats-and Binding Phonology. The role of the syllable is critically investigated in a number of areas of substantive linguistic evidence, among others, in first language acquisition, second language acquisition, aphasia, writing systems, metrics, diachronic change, phonostylistic variation, speech errors and speech play, etc. Data is drawn from a large number of languages, while empirical investigations are based on English, Polish and German. Beats-and Binding Phonology opens new vistas, among others, for predicting and interpreting errors in second language acquisition and aphasia with respect to the order of acquisition/loss, difficulties with clusters, transfer of first language processes, difficulties with rhythm, influence of morphology, etc. It also constitutes a theoretical innovation in the general framework of natural linguistics.
