Pascal Demoly - Biography#

I am a respiratory physician and allergist, Professor of Pulmonology and Head of Allergy Unit of the Department of Respiratory Medicine of the University Hospital of Montpellier, France. I did my medical degree at the university of Montpellier, France (graduated in 1992) and then moved to the USA as a post-doctoral research fellow at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, Maryland) and at Cornell University (New York city, New York). My academic carrier has been rather linear, from assistant (1994) to associate (1999) and full professor (2002) in the same department.

After several basic and epidemiological experiences in different institutes (Montpellier, Bordeaux, Sorbonne Paris), I have built up in 2021 the Desbrest Institute of Epidemiology and Public Health, a University of Montpellier - INSERM - INRIA research unit focusing on epidemiology and public health of chronic non communicable diseases, massive health and environmental data, and modern mathematics. Drawing on my experience in allergology, I could create and now co-chair the WHO Collaborating Center on Scientific Classification Support at the University Hospital of Montpellier (introducing for the first time the allergy and hypersensitivity chapter in the 11th International Classification of Diseases).

Recently, I have been appointed by the President of the University of Montpellier for 4 years (renewable) as director of the University Preventive Medicine Service, which is a department made of 45 health professionals in charge of the health of the students (52,000) and employees (5,000) of the University.

My passion and hard work to support the national allergy community has led me to lead several national and international committees allowing me to obtain the creation in France in 2017 of allergy as a full academic specialty. I have in particular been twice the president of the French Allergy Society, 10 years apart (2010 and 2022), twice vice-president for education and specialty of the European Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (2011-2015) and associate editor of ALLERGY (2010-2018). For the same reason (representing allergy), I have been working hard to become a member of the French National Academy of Medicine.

In the last years my research interest has focused mainly on allergic rhinitis, asthma and allergy diagnosis and treatment, allergen immunotherapy, anaphylaxis and drug allergy where he has extensive clinical, research and lecturing experience.

I have published over 1,000 articles including more than 700 in international peer-reviewed journals (H factor 125 and citations over 76,000, 2018 and 2021 Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher, category immunology) and lecturing in many different countries.
