Elias Campo - Biography#

The research of Prof Campo is focused on the genetic and molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of hematological neoplasms and their clinical implications. The aims are to understand the mechanisms involved in the development and progression of these tumors, define more precise diagnostic criteria, establish predictive models of evolution and response to the treatment, and identify molecular targets for the development of new therapeutic strategies. This work is done in a multidisciplinary team that integrates investigators with different profiles from basic to clinical science. He has published more than 450 scientific articles and holds several patents. His research is founded by the Spanish Commission of Science and Technology, the Spanish Instituto de Salud Carlos III, the European Union, the USA National Cancer Institute, and the USA Lymphoma Research Foundation.

Prof Campo received his MD and PhD degrees from the Medical School at the University of Barcelona. After his residency in Pathology, he conducted a postdoctoral fellowship in molecular pathology at the National Cancer Institute, NIH, Bethesda, MD, USA. He joined the Laboratory of Pathology at the Hospital Clinic, University of Barcelona, where he became Professor of Anatomic Pathology and Chief of the Hematopathology Unit. He is currently the Research Director of the Hospital Clinic and the Institute of Biomedical Reseaarch Augusti Pi i Sunyer of Barcelona. He has been member of the Steering Committee of the WHO Classification of the Hematopoietic Neoplasms and is Director of the Spanish Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Genome Project in the framework of the International Cancer Genome Consortium. He has received several awards including the Josep Trueta from the Catalan Academy of Medical Sciences, Narcis Monturiol Medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Severo Ochoa Award for Biomedical Research. He was accepted as Member of the Academia Europaea en 2013 and Member of the National Academy of Medicine of the USA in 2018. He serves as member of the Scientific Advisory Boards of several institutions and journals, and has been Associate Editor of Haematologica and resident of the European Association for Haematopathology.
