Federico Bussolino - Biography#


1980: MD degree
1985: PhD in Nephrology and Immunopathology in 1985 on a thesis of the role of Platelet activating factor in regulating calcium fluxes in endothelial cells.

He was post-doc and visiting professor at Inserm in France (2 yrs), ETH in Zurich, (1 yr) and Erfurt University ( 1 yr). In 1991 he was assistant professor in Biochemistry at the Medical School of the University of Torino, and from in 1994 up to date, Full Professor of Biochemistry.

Management Experience

In 2002, he proposed to the Rector of the University to create a new Department in the new Institute for Cancer Research funded by a private Foundation in collaboration with the University. The success of this project allowed the constitution of the first department of University of Torino exclusively focused on Oncology.

In 2003, funded a PhD programme in complex systems applied to post genomic biology aimed at the integration between biologists, computer scientists, informatics, physicists.

A third relevant experience was the participation to and the Presidency of the “Evaluation Board” of the University of Torino. He firstly established criteria to evaluate the research activities in Humanity and socio-economical sciences at the University of Torino.

In 2009 he was nominated Scientific Director of FPRC. During this period he coordinated 16 groups (130 people) with a budget of 12000 KEuro.

The most relevant achievements were:
  • A 3 years evaluation track based on a site visit of an External International Board (C. Marshall, UK; B. Browm, UK; E. Keshet, IL; A. Fusco. I; M. Giacca, I.; I. Dickic, D; T. Acker, D).
  • Organization of the Basic Research Committee with all PI and Administrative Staff to discuss research strategies and to solve flowing problems and to improve and facilitate the collaboration with clinicians.
  • Agreement with Roche Diagnostics Next Generation Sequencing Technologies
  • Preparation the scientific and logistic project of an enlargement of the Institute with the building of the Interdisciplinary Cancer Center. This project has been prepared with the help of an Advisory International Board (G. Giaccone, U.S.; P. DiFiore , I.; C. Marshall, U.K., I. Dikic, D, L. Serrano, S), succesfully submitted to an international revision
