Data on the Web: From Relations to Semistructured Data and XML (with Serge Abiteboul, Dan Suciu), Morgan Kaufmann 1999. Foundational book on semistructured data, with over 2000 citations.

Why and Where: A Characterization of Data Provenance (with Sanjeev Khanna, Wang Chiew Tan). ICDT 2001: 316-330 Introducing the clean and by now standard model of provenance, over 1000 citations.

A query language and optimization techniques for unstructured data (with S Davidson, G Hillebrand, D Suciu), SIGMOD Conference 1996: 505-516. An early paper on semistructured data that made a big influence of
formation of the field.

Types and Persistence in Database Programming Languages (with M. Atkinson). ACM Comput. Surv. 19(2): 105-190 (1987)

Polymorphism and Type Inference in Database Programming (with A. Ohori). ACM Trans. Database Syst. 21(1): 30-76 (1996)

These two papers had much impact on bridging database and programming language communities.

Keys for XML (with Susan B. Davidson, Wenfei Fan, Carmem S. Hara, Wang Chiew Tan). Computer Networks 39(5): 473-487 (2002) Defined keys for XML data which were later adopted by XML standards.

Principles of Programming with Complex Objects and Collection Types (with Shamim A. Naqvi, Val Tannen, Limsoon Wong). Theor. Comput. Sci. 149(1): 3-48 (1995)

Comprehension Syntax (with Leonid Libkin, Dan Suciu, Val Tannen, Limsoon Wong). SIGMOD Record 23(1): 87-96 (1994)

These two papers showed how ideas from programming languages can be used to obtain declarative and optimisable languages for complex collections of data.

Archiving scientific data (with Sanjeev Khanna, Keishi Tajima, Wang Chiew Tan). ACM Trans. Database Syst. 29: 2-42 (2004) Introduced archiving techniques widely used in the scientific data community.

Using Powerdomains to Generalize Relational Databases (with Achim Jung, Atsushi Ohori). Theor. Comput. Sci. 91(1): 23-55 (1991) An elegant use of techniques from programming semantics to provide models of incompleteness in databases.

Buneman's influence on the field is also witnessed by the collection of essays dedicated to him: LNCS volume 8000, "In Search of Elegance in the Theory and Practice of Computation: Essays Dedicated to Peter Buneman", published in 2013.
