Alexis Brice - Biography#

Education and Training

Alexis Brice obtained his MD in Medicine from the University of Paris Descartes in 1988 and completed his specialization in Neurology in Paris in 1991. He was awarded the Habilitation to Conduct Research (HDR) in Neurosciences by the University Pierre et Marie Curie (Sorbonne University) in 1994.

Academic Positions and Leadership

Alexis Brice has held a series of senior leadership positions in French and European biomedical research. From 2012 to 2024, he served as Executive Director of the Paris Brain Institute (ICM) at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, and from 2016 to 2024 as Director of the IHU-A-ICM. Between 2014 and 2024, he directed the CNRS–Inserm–Sorbonne University research unit UMR 7225 / U1127. Since 2024, he has been President of the Board of the Brain & Mind Biocluster in Paris. He has been Professor of Medical Genetics at Sorbonne University Medical School since 1995 and has led the team “Molecular basis, physiopathology and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases” at ICM for over two decades. Earlier roles include Head of the Department of Genetics at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital and Co-director of national neuroscience initiatives within AVIESAN.

International Service and Advisory Roles

Alexis Brice has served on numerous international scientific advisory and evaluation boards, including those of McGill University, the Montreal Neurological Institute, the European Research Council, the UK Dementia Research Institute, DZNE (Germany), the University of Geneva, and major funding agencies in Belgium, Germany, and the UK. He has also contributed extensively to European scientific societies and national research councils.

Honours and Awards

He was elected to the French National Academy of Sciences in 2024 and to the National Academy of Medicine in 2023. His distinctions include the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, Officier de l'Ordre National du Mérite, the Fondation Allianz Prize, the Roger de Spoelberch Prize, the Lamonica Prize in Neurology, and the Grand Prix for Medical Research of the Institut de France.

Alexis Brice has authored more than 1,050 peer-reviewed publications. His work has received over 140,000 citations, with a current H-index of 174, reflecting sustained, exceptional impact in neuroscience and neurodegenerative disease research.
