Supervision of Researchers in Early Career Phases
I was the supervisor of a series of PhD and habilitation candidates and Postdocs, that are now established in the scientific community such as. In total I supervised more than 20 PhD Theses and numerous Master and Bachelor Theses. Currently, there are four postdocs, seven PhD candidates, 11 MSc candidates, and three BSc candidates in my lab.
I managed to publish in various fields related to biogeography with foci on plants and vegetation but also on vector-borne diseases.
In WoS publication record is 247 peer-reviewed papers with 16,456 citations and a h-index of 61 (23. January 2025). However, this does not include the textbooks, book chapters and practice-oriented publications in German aiming for applied fields and the general public.

From 2015 to 2018 CB was leading the EU Horizon project ECOPOTENTIAL together with Antonello Provenzale. I was leading national research consortia such as FORKAST and biodiversa consortia such as DiMoC.
Study Programs and Teaching
CB designed the study program “Global Change Ecology M.Sc.” financed by the Elite Network of Bavaria over 10 years, incl. 6 staff positions. He initiated together with Eckhard Nagel the study program “Environment, Climate Change and Health M.Sc.”
Since 2005, lead of the La Palma Science School for international students.
