Alexander Baklanov - Biography#

A. Baklanov has over 30 years experience in meteorological and environmental science , in particular, in integrated weather, climate and Earth-system research. In 2014 he joined the WMO Research Department, where his main duties are cross-cutting between weather, environment and climate research programs and seamless integrated modeling. In this capacity he was one of lead authors of WWOSC book "Seamless Prediction of the Earth System", initiator and chair of the world-wide CCMM Symposium on "Coupled Chemistry-Meteorology/Climate Modeling" (2015) and many other activities. He is also affiliated professor at Niels Bohr Institute of University of Copenhagen, Member of the Board of International Association for Urban Climate, and International Commission for Polar Meteorology; and Editor-in-Chief of international journal “Urban Climate”.

He has titles/degrees of full Professor (2008), Dr. Sci. (1998) and PhD (1983) in Meteorology and Climatology, honorary, affiliated or visiting professor at several European universities. He has supervised 10 PhD dissertations.

He started research career in 1979 and got PhD at Novosibirsk Computing Center of USSR Academy of Sciences - famous research school, led by Prof. Gury Marchuk (last President of USSR Academy of Sciences) and known for one of the first global coupled atmosphere-ocean model systems.

Since 1992 Baklanov works in Austria, Denmark, UK, Sweden and Switzerland. He has initiated and led a series of big research projects (with overall budget > 20 million Euro), including:
  • EU FP7 MEGAPOLI (Megacities: Emissions, urban, regional and Global Atmospheric POLlution and climate effects, and Integrated tools for assessment and mitigation)
  • FP5 FUMAPEX (Integrated Systems for Forecasting Urban Meteorology, Air Pollution and Population Exposure)
  • FP6 EnviroRISKS (Environmental Risks: Monitoring, Management and Remediation of Man-made Changes in Siberia)
  • EuMetChem (European Framework for Online Integrated Air Quality and Meteorology Modeling)
  • Modeling Platform of PEEX (Pan-Eurasian Experiment - a new multidisciplinary, global-change research program)

Among other projects: Arctic Risk, EnsCLIMA, Origins of Arctic Haze, etc.

In spite of much organizational work, Baklanov goes on doing pioneering research in the areas of seamless modeling of Earth systems and theory/modeling of urban climate.
