The conference has brought together senior European research policymakers, science users and leading researchers, to debate European Science in the following areas:
- The Lisbon Agenda 2010 and beyond: Aspiration or Reality?
- European Science: technologies at the cutting edge?
- Nanosciences;Robotics;Plant genetics and geography
- European Scholarship: serving Society?
- Law; Sociology and Economics
- European Humanities: putting Europe into context?
- Medical and Bio-medical sciences including neuroscience
- Synthesis and future challenges for ‘European’ Science?
Throughout the meeting there was a Poster exhibition and free "Science Cafe" for more intimate discussion, and also a number of "Mini-symposia" took place. On 9 September there was the Annual Business Meeting of members, the Opening ceremony, and the presenation of the ERASMUS medal to Frechet.

The conference was preceded by various meetings, including the nomination subcommittees, the council meeting and the general assembly. In the latter the three independent members elwcted to council were:Cinzia Ferrini (ITA) (who remains as a member of the Board)
Susan Bassnett (UK) elected for a second and final term
Balazs Gulyas (Sweden) elected for a first term
