Nancy Cartwright receives The Frontiers of Knowledge Award#

The BBVA Foundation announced that its prestigious Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Humanities will be conferred on Nancy Cartwright MAE for her use of philosophy to strengthen scientific rationality and ground the adoption of effective, evidence-based public policies.

The BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Humanities category has been awarded, in its 18th edition, to Nancy Cartwright (Durham University, United Kingdom, and University of California San Diego, United States) for what the committee calls her “decisive contributions” to the philosophy of science. For five decades now, Cartwright’s seminal work has “built a bridge between philosophy and the actual practice of science” through her innovative vision of such key concepts as causality and the laws of nature.

About The Frontiers of Knowledge Awards#

The BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards are intended to recognize and reward excellence in research and cultural creation, especially contributions that have achieved broad impact due to their originality and significance. The name of the awards refers equally to research work that successfully enlarges the scope of knowledge – moving forward the frontiers of the known world – and the meeting and overlap of disciplinary domains. The Frontiers Awards distinguish fundamental disciplinary or supradisciplinary advances in eight categories:

  • Basic Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics)
  • Biology and Biomedicine
  • Information and Communication Technologies
  • Climate Change and Environmental Sciences
  • Economics, Finance and Management
  • Humanities
  • Social Sciences
  • Music and Opera
