Peer Bork (1963 - 2026)#
Academia Europaea mourns the loss of Professor Peer Bork MAE, member of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Section since 2018.
Professor Ray Dixon, Chair of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Section writes:
"Academia Europaea notes with deep regret the death of Professor Peer Bork MAE on 16 January 2026. Professor Bork had several leadership roles at EMBL, including serving as its Director for 5 years and was an internationally recognised leader in bioinformatics, metagenomics, and computational biology. His pioneering scientific contributions, his commitment to collaborative and open research, and his service to European and international science have left a lasting legacy. He will be greatly missed by colleagues across the Academy and the wider scientific community. Academia Europaea extends its sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues."
