(NAE) this year.

New AE Members of the NAE#
Anastasia Ailamaki MAE, professor, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland. For contributions to database systems and their performance evaluation. Prof. Ailamaki is Member of the Informatics Section of Academia Europaea since 2020.
Nader Engheta MAE, H. Nedwill Ramsey Professor, Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. For contributions to the development of metamaterials and their applications. Prof. Engheta is Member of the Physics Section of Academia Europaea since 2024.

Mohamed-Slim Khemais Alouini MAE, Al-Khawarzmi Distinguished Professor and UNESCO Chair on Education to Connect the Unconnected, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Thuwal, Saudi Arabia. For contributions to modeling and evaluation of wireless communication systems. Prof. Alouini is Member of the Informatics Section of Academia Europaea since 2019.
Yves J.M. Brechet MAE, scientific director, Saint-Gobain, Paris, France. For contributions to physical metallurgy, mechanical deformation and flow localization mechanisms in structural materials, and improved understanding of heterogeneous materials. Prof. Brechet is Member of the Physics Section of Academia Europaea since 2011.
Anny Cazenave MAE, emeritus scientist, Laboratoire d'Etudes en Géophysique et Océanographie Spatiales, Toulouse, France. For contributions and leadership in satellite altimetry. Prof. Cazenave is Member of the Earth and Cosmic Sciences Section of Academia Europaea since 1991.
Giovanni Giacomo De Micheli MAE, professor and director, Ecocloud Center, Swiss Federal Technology Institute of Lausanne, Switzerland. For contributions to network on chips and advances in electronic design automation. Prof. De Micheli is Member of the Informatics Section of Academia Europaea since 2010.
Demis Hassabis MAE, co-founder and chief executive officer, Google DeepMind, London, United Kingdom. For leadership in the application of artificial intelligence to biochemistry and other fields. Demis Hassabis is Member of the Informatics Section of Academia Europaea since 2023.
Guibin Jiang MAE, professor, State Key Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology, Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. For global leadership in developing methods for sampling, analysis, and control of emerging pollutants. Prof. Jiang is Member of the Chemical Sciences Section of Academia Europaea since 2026.
About the National Academy of Engineering (NAE)#
Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education. Members are also recognized for pioneering new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing and implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.
NAE members are among the world’s most accomplished engineers from business, academia, and government. Founded in 1964, the NAE provides independent, objective analysis and advice to the nation, offering leadership and insights to address complex challenges. Members are elected by their peers; the ballot for the Class of 2026 was finalized in December, and the final vote took place in January.
