Professor Jürgen Habermas

"Academia Europaea deeply mourns the loss of Jürgen Habermas who passed away in Starnberg on March 14, 2026. Jürgen Habermas was one of the most influential philosophers and public intellectuals of our time, whose work profoundly shaped contemporary thought in philosophy, sociology and political theory. His ideas on the public sphere, on deliberative democracy and communicative rationality have inspired generations of scholars and leave a lasting mark on academic as well as public debates. Habermas’s 2019 two-volume history of Western philosophy, guided by the question of the relationship between faith and knowledge, testifies to the exceptional breadth and depth and, particularly, to the relentless continuity of his critical thinking. Jürgen Habermas follows his wife Ute Habermas-Wesselhoeft who died in June 2025. He was a member of the Philosophy, Theology & Religious Studies Section of the Academia Europaea since the year 1989. Academia Europaea bids farewell to Jürgen Habermas with sincere admiration and gratitude."

Professor Alexander Fidora MAE, Chair of the Philosophy, Theology & Religious Studies Section
