Frank Grosveld (1948 - 2026)#

Academia Europaea are saddened to announce the death of Professor Frank Grosveld MAE, elected as member of the Cell and Developmental Biology Section in 1989.

Professor Crisanto Gutierrez MAE, Chair of the Cell and Developmental Biology Section, writes:

We have received the sad news that Frank Grosveld, born in 1948, passed away June 25, 2026. He was a prominent member of Academia Europaea since 1989, in the Cell and Developmental Biology Section. It will be impossible to summarize in a few words his contributions to science since he has been one of the major driving forces in the field of gene regulation over the last decades. His pioneering research on the regulation of the globin gene locus led to fundamental discoveries in transcriptional regulation and epigenetics that serve the basis for numerous recognitions such us the Spinoza and Louis Jeantet Prizes, his election to EMBO and the Royal Society, his participation as member of editorial boards of EMBO J. and Molecular Cell, among many others. He was also very active in biotech initiatives as co-founder of several companies. The Academia Europaea and the scientific community will miss him and will be in debt with Prof. Grosveld for his seminal contributions to cell and developmental biology.
