Professor Donald Dingwell elected President of Academia Europaea#

Following an intensive scrutiny process, the Board have accepted the recommendation of an independent search group who proposed Professor Donald B. Dingwell MAE for an approval by the Academia Europaea members.

An E-ballot of all eligible members was held between 17 – 30 June 2025.

Result of the ballot:#

Voted: 1,215 members
Yes: 1190
No: 25

By a clear majority, Professor Donald B. Dingwell MAE is elected as the President of the Academia Europaea.#

His term will officially start at the AGM of members on 14th October 2025. He will serve a term of three years and is then eligible to be re-elected for a second and final term of three years.

About Donald B. Dingwell#

Professor Donald B. Dingwell, President Elect of Academia Europaea

Born and raised in Canada, Don Dingwell moved to Germany in 1987. From 2000-2024 he was the Chair in Mineralogy and Petrology at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich. There he chaired the newly-founded Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences for over 2 decades.

Dingwell's research background is in the earth sciences. He has published ca. 600 papers on geomaterials, magmas and volcanism. His approach is fundamentally experimental and materials-based.

He has received numerous scientific awards, medals and prizes, and holds several honorary degrees, fellowships, and academy memberships as well as the national orders of Germany and Canada.

He has been President of the European Geoscience Union (EGU) and the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth´s Interior (IAVCEI), as well as the 3rd and last Secretary-General of the European Research Council.

Prof. Dingwell was elected to the Academia Europaea in 2007 as member of the Earth and Cosmic Sciences section and has been involved in its activities and structures for over a decade.
