Change of Section Denomination#
The name of the 'Human Mobility, Environment, Space and Governance' Section was changed to 'Human Mobility, Environment, Space and Sustainability'. The change was discussed by the Section Chairs and Class Chair of the Social and Related Sciences Class and approved by the Board of Trustees of Academia Europaea.
Professor Benno Werlen, the Chair of the now Human Mobility, Environment, Space and Sustainability Section writes about the motivation for the change:
'Sustainability' is one of the most important goals of the UN's programs and has become a key topic in the research agendas of national academies and funding organizations around the world. So far, however, the AE has not explicitly addressed this research and policy field in its section denominations. However, given that the AE is now 'The Academy of Europe' and the EU considers sustainability to be one of its political priorities, it is time for this to change. When asked to change the section's name to avoid duplication of the word 'governance' in the names of two sections, the section's steering committee responded positively to the request, and the AE board accepted the proposal to change the section's name from 'Human Mobility, Environment, Space and Governance' to 'Human Mobility, Environment, Space and Sustainability'. This adjusted focus will also more precisely indicate how the section intends to bridge mobility, the environment, and space.
