Change of the denomination of the Social and Related Sciences Class to Social Sciences Class#
At the last meeting of the Board of Trustees of Academia Europaea, the members of the Board voted in favour of the change of the name of the Class of "Social and Related Sciences" to "Social Sciences".
Professor Björn Wittrock MAE, Chair of the present Social Sciences Class, explains the reasons for the change in the denomination:
“The previous name (‘Social and Related Sciences’) is long and cumbersome. At the same time, it does not provide any information as to what the “related sciences” are. Thus, two options were considered by the section chairs and the Board: namely either to shorten the name or else to provide a specification of the “related sciences” are. Unfortunately, such a specification would lead to an even longer name.
At the same time, is common practice in many, if not most academies, to include disciplines such as psychology, economics and law under the designation social sciences. The change in the denomination was discussed in depth by the relevant section chairs for these fields and the change of the name was unanimously supported by all sections of the Class."
