Unconscious Bias in Science – From Awareness to Action#

Date: 5 June 2026 at 13:00 (CET) via Zoom#

The Academia Europaea Budapest Knowledge Hub is pleased to announce an upcoming webinar organized within the frame of Empowering Women in Science within Europe with emphasis on the Danube Region project. The event will take place via Zoom and will feature a lecture by Professor Petra Rudolf MAE, Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, University of Groningen. Professor Rudolf was elected as member of the Physics Section of Academia Europaea in 2021.

In her talk, “Unconscious bias: how it impacts careers in science and how to mitigate this influence”, Prof. Rudolf will address the pervasive role of unconscious bias in shaping scientific careers. The lecture will explore how different forms of bias—including performance bias, performance attribution bias, maternal bias, and the competence/likeability of trade-off—affect evaluation, opportunities, and career progression in academia.

Participants will gain insights into recognizing unconscious bias in professional environments and practical strategies to mitigate its impact, contributing to more inclusive and equitable research cultures.

Before the event, participants are encouraged to explore their own biases via the Harvard Implicit Association Test.

We warmly invite all interested colleagues to join this timely and important discussion.
