Advanced materials: Is strategic autonomy achievable for Europe?#

Interactive webinar#

15 June 2026, 14:00 CEST (Brussels), 15:00 EEST (Athens), 13:00 BST (London)#

Advanced materials are designed to give enhanced performance over conventional materials and are essential to our modern way of life. Advanced materials are crucial to innovation and industrial leadership in many sectors including energy, electronics, transportation and healthcare.

The global demand for materials is growing, creating pressure on the supply of critical raw materials. In the context of an increasingly volatile geopolitical and economic environment, Europe has ambitions to secure its strategic autonomy by accelerating research, innovation and deployment of advanced materials.

Drawing on recent work by the European Scientific Advice Mechanism, our expert panel will define what ‘strategic autonomy’ means in the context of advanced materials, outlining both the opportunities and vulnerabilities faced by Europe. Together, we will discuss the way forward in terms of shaping a European strategy and developing effective legislation for the future.

Join us for this interactive webinar, which is free and open to all. The webinar is organized by SAPEA, which is a part of the The Scientific Advice Mechanism to the European Commission.
