- Distinguished with the 1st place (ex aequo) of the National Defense Prize 1990, for his work "From the Castle of the Reconquest to the Romanesque Castle (IX to XII century)"
- Prof. Barroca's PhD dissertation, Epigrafia Medieval Portuguesa (862-1422). Lisboa: Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian-Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, 2000. 4 volumes. 3091 pp, received the award of the "Instituto Português de Heráldica" in 2000
- Prize of the Portuguese Institute of Heraldry 2000 for its work Portuguese Medieval Epigraphy (862-1422)
- The collective work History of Private Life in Portugal - The Middle Ages (Lisbon, Círculo de Leitores / Temas e Debates, 2010), directed by José MATTOSO and coordinated by Bernardo Vasconcelos and SOUSA, where he participated with the chapter "Memories", was distinguished with the Honorable Mention of the "A. Almeida Fernandes Award - 2012"
