Tbilisi Knowledge Hub#

The Tbilisi Knowledge Hub was established in 2019, and acts as the Academia Europaea's branch in the Eastern partnership countries. By assisting to coordinated interactions with European universities, research centers and scientific funds, the Tbilisi Hub promotes in the region the European standards of scholarship and develops pan-European scientific collaborations. It contributes to the popularization of science and technology by organizing conferences, seminars and summer schools. Moreover, the Tbilisi Hub aims to become a platform to develop multidisciplinary scientific activities and expertise related to the biocultural - biological, cultural, linguistic, ecological - diversity in the South Caucasus, at the border of Eastern Europe with Western Asia.



On 24th April 2019, Academia Europaea officially launched a new Knowledge Hub at Tbilisi State University in Georgia. The Tbilisi Knowledge Hub is the fifth regional hub of the Academy with other hubs placed in Barcelona, Bergen, Cardiff and Wroclaw.

The collaboration agreement between Academia Europaea and Tbilisi State University was signed by the President of Academia Europaea, Sierd Cloetingh MAE, and by the Rector of Tbilisi State University, George Sharvashidze MAE.

The mission of the Tbilisi Knowledge Hub is to follow the Academia Europaea’s values and share the Pan-European interests in the region via assisting in generation, spread and popularisation of new scientific knowledge, sharing the European standards and mechanisms in scientific research, promoting linkages among science and policy development, thus contributing to overall influence and benefits of scientific research and the STI sector for wider society.

Priority area of Tbilisi Knowledge Hub is comprehensive research of Diversity in the region, through fostering interdisciplinary, interinstitutional and intersectoral collaborations. AE Tbilisi Knowledge Hub aims to become a platform to develop multidisciplinary scientific activities and expertise related to the Biocultural - Biological, Cultural, Linguistic, Ecological - diversity in South Caucasus, at the border of Eastern Europe with Western Asia.

AE Tbilisi Knowledge Hub: Priorities and Plans#

Planetary health – the health of human civilization and the state of natural ecosystems on which it depends.

AE Tbilisi Knowledge Hub aims to become a platform for multi-disciplinary scientific activities and expertise related to the biocultural - biological, ecological, cultural, linguistic - diversity in the South Caucasus, at the border of Eastern Europe with Western Asia.

The objectives will be implemented through:#

  • Diverse knowledge activities, including conferences, summer schools, lecture series, and high-level expert panels with wide European participation.
  • Support of scholars, mobilization and internationalization of the local scientific institutions, establishment and consolidation of relations between foreign and local researchers.
  • Stimulation of linkages between the AE at large and the centers of research and scholarship of the Georgian Universities, as well as centers of learning throughout the Georgia and Europe.
  • Close Cooperation with the Young Academy of Europe

  • Reconstruction of the spatial and cultural patterns of human migrations in the region
  • Dynamics of biogeography, faunal and floral exchange
  • Evolution of early domestications (plants and animals)
  • Epidemiology of communicable and non-communicable diseases in geographically and culturally distinct settings
  • Therapeutic bacteriophages as a weapon against antibiotic-resistant bacteria
  • Linguistic diversity and historic-cultural data
  • Psychology of ethnic groups and sociology of ethnic relations
  • Innovative technological studies of cultural heritage
