Working at CNRS since 1995, P. Walter is Research director at CNRS and head of the Laboratory of Molecular and Structural Archaeology, LAMS (Sorbonne Université/CNRS/UPMC) in Paris, France. He develops new instruments and analytical techniques adapted to the in situ and non-invasive study of ancient materials. His main research interests are focused on the use of analytical chemistry to understand the development of chemistry to create health and beauty products during Antiquity as well as pigments, binders and medium useful for the Old Masters.\\

He is the holder of an MSc degree in physics from the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon and a PhD degree in Geochemistry at P. Sabatier University, Toulouse, France (1993). \\
\\
He received the silver medal of the French research organization CNRS in 2008, of the Franklin-Lavoisier prize at the Chemical Heritage Foundation (Philadelphia) in 2010 and Le Bel Prize of the French Chemical Society (2017). He was appointed Professor at College de France for the academic year 2013-2014, holder of the Liliane Bettencourt Chair of Innovative Technology.\\

He is co-author of about 250 scientific publications (50% chemistry, 50% humanities) and invited lecturer more than 200 times in conferences, workshops, seminars.\\

He is Chair or co-chair of about ten international workshops, congresses or schools, in particular the International School H. Curien of molecular and structural archaeology, Erice, Italy (2006, 2010, 2015). Founding member of a Gordon Research Conference on scientific methods in Cultural Heritage research.\\
